How to enjoy Summer
June is halfway through the year and is a time for love and peaceful moments. The weather will be wonderful, the flowers are abundant and smell delicious, somehow life feels so good. This is a time to be outside more than you are inside, even on a wet day, grab your umbrella and smell the fresh grass.
June is also the month we celebrate Aromatherapy. I am passionate about essential oils, I work with them every day and have done for over 30 years and I am still finding out information on their benefits and uses.
Here at Helpmeorganics, we use organic essential oils which have been grown, produced, and bottled with minimal to no impact on the soil, insects, wildlife, and our planet. The compounds are stronger so you need to use less to enjoy their benefits. In past blog posts, I have looked at the benefits of lots of the essential oils we use but today I want to talk about our SCENT OF THE MONTH - Sage, rose geranium, grapefruit which you will find in our “help me say hello to summer” collection which is being launched today.
Sage is a wonderful oil for clarifying the mind. Use during meditation to cleanse the atmosphere and bring clarity to your feelings. Some people use rolled sage leaves to cleanse the air within your home, this is called Smudging and is thought to energise and clean the energy within a room. You can buy actual smudging sticks but sage essential oil is thought to create a similar cleansing effect. Although we cannot claim it, there are findings that sage helps to deter insects so if you are enjoying the many long summer evenings and want to ward off mosquitos, it may be useful to light our candle or add 3-4 drops of our oil in a bucket of water and swill under your garden table. (please be careful if you have pets, they must not drink the water)
Rose geranium (pelagonium rosa) essential oil is very balancing and has a delicious floral scent, bringing a feeling of happiness, calm, and lift spirits. Summer is a time for flowers and we wanted our summer blend to celebrate this.
We use Pink Grapefruit essential oil in our summer blend to add that lightness, the freshness of a summer’s day cannot be bettered, when blended with Lavender oil, these two essential oils help to balance the blend so that you will enjoy everything that summer has to offer us. We hope you enjoy using our soy candle, room spray, reed diffuser, and essential oil blend.

THIS MONTH, REMEMBER TO
During May and June, we highlight how important our gardens are for wildlife, birds and insects. Gosh, they need all the help we can give them. This spring has been so cold, dry then wet and cold, we had a lone blue tit mum make a nest in one of bird boxes which had a camera so we could watch with delight baby chicks. She laid 7 eggs, one didn’t hatch and she quickly lost two chicks. She battled the wind and rain feeding her babies, deciding on whether to keep warm or feed her young. Sadly this morning, she had lost her last four chicks, my heart broke for her. To watch her trying to rouse her babies and still bring in flies was heartbreaking but I truly feel she was up against it being a lone parent. Blue tits only have one brood so I will have to wait for next year with all my fingers crossed hoping that the weather is kinder and her mate survives to help. It is for this reason that we must leave our lawns longer between mows, stop using pesticides and plant hedges, native trees and flowers which encourage caterpillars for blue tit mums (and other bird mums) to feed to their young. I will be so ready for next year (although i did buy mealworms but they went into hungry starling tummies before she found them).
In the first week of June, we enjoy learning more about how gardening can improve our wellbeing, I think its wonderful how many more people are discovering the joy that growing your own vegetables can give. You know how they ve been grown, in peat-free compost (we know why this is vital), learn to love your soil and worms. Adopt a “no dig” policy that maintains the structure of the soil, this helps control pests and disease.
It is a time to discover how we can help the environment on World Environment Day. David Attenborough urges us to waste much less, use less plastic, save as much water as possible, change to a sustainable green energy company, stop using chemicals, plant trees, thick native hedges. Tell your local MP that you want them to adopt a greener policy and start spreading the work about living in synergy with nature. We are working towards being NetZero by 2026. If you would like to read more about making small changes to work towards being NetZero yourselves then read here. You can also read through these small steps too. If we all take small steps, together our world will continue to heal, that’s a lovely thought isn’t it.
Meeting up with your best friend for a good chat and a big giggle. Its the best medicine and now we are allowed to hug again, I expect everyone’s stress levels to lower just by having that contact. At the end of June is World Well-being Week, we will be actively supporting this on our social media as we are advocates of using aromatherapy to be happy, sleep better, live better and thrive.
My favourite day is going to the beach and allowing the ocean to absorb me. I can feel my energy levels rising but we need to give our seas some love. If you are out walking by the sea, do some litter picking too. The oceans are full of plastic and chemical waste. Some see it as a huge dumping ground but its not. So on World Ocean Day (June 8th) pledge to look after our oceans and all the life that lives in and around it.
June 21st is the Summer Solstice when we have the longest days and the shortest nights. Hopefully, its a day when we can get out and about living our lives again.
Do you fancy joining us in supporting the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. You can pledge to pick up litter as you walk to clear up the rubbish in your road, town, favourite place. Most towns have a Litter Picking Campaign, its a lovely way to get involved. Its so sad to see images of hedgehogs, birds and other mammals stuck in our litter.
After watching the programme about the remarkable young lady, Greta Thunberg, I was stunned to see the effects of burning wood ash on the glaciers and it struck me. If everyone stopped having garden fires, or using woodburning stoves, this would reduce the amount of ash in the environment, therefore reducing the black ash on the glaciers which is causing light to be absorbed by the glacier rather than reflecting it. A simple change by us will have a huge effect. Another thought from this programme, is why are our roofs not a light colour or even white to, again, reflect light back? If we all make small changes, we can continue to heal our planet post covid.

AND FINALLY:
June is the start of summer and hopefully more easing of restrictions. Its been a very long journey to this point and while we must still be aware and keep washing our hands, it is a wonderful time to loosen those shoulders and enjoy having a hug. Here are our suggestions to help you relax and make the most of summer!
Use our “help me have a mindful of calm” upstairs. The blend of essential oils are very calming. If you are studying or you have someone in your home revising or worrying about moving onto their next school starting school or university, this blend will help. Encourage them to learn yoga or to sit quietly in the garden.
If you are worried about mixing with others, that’s understandable its been a huge worry. Our blend “help me, i’m feeling under the weather” is made with powerful antibacterial oils. Fill bowls of water and add 2-3 drops (to begin with). Place on windowsills. The water acts as a magnet for pollen granules which help ease hayfever and the oils will gently diffuse to clear your head and sinuses.
