How to Discover Wellness in May
“May, more than any other month, wants us to feel most alive”
As the wheel turns from April to May, the days become longer, sunnier, and warm. We instinctively want to be outside, eat lighter foods, and be more active. Our bodies become leaner and our minds more relaxed with the brighter days. We are near our peak fitness and health so let’s make the most of it! Read our tips for feeling happy and healthy using foods, essential oils, mindfulness, and nature, let us show you how.
Our Top Three Wellness Tips for May
when was the last time you read a book in the afternoon, completely engrossed in the story or had a nap to replenish your energy levels? Spending time relaxing is vital for your health, both physically and mentally. Feeling relaxed lowers your blood pressure, calms your digestion, and reduces the levels of stress hormones which in turn slows your breathing. So please don’t feel guilty, putting your feet up with a good read, music or having a sleep. Take a break from the stresses of life and use that time to rediscover the important things that matter to you most. We all deserve an anti-stress day to recharge our batteries.
Eat well and give your body the nutrition to keep your energy levels up. Reduce (if possible eliminate) processed food as it’s full of sugar and salt plus a ridiculous amount of additives. Eating a plant-based diet ensures you are receiving maximum nutrition with minimum effect on our planet. You will have to take a B12 supplement but you can buy an organic powdered supplement that can be added to smoothies. Ensure you drink plenty of water, as there are so many additives to our tap water, invest in a filter jug for the fridge. There are refillable options for the filters to reduce plastic waste. Would you consider growing your own fruit and veg? With the prices getting higher by the month, growing lettuce is as easy as spinach, beans, and peas. If you buy spring onions, pop the base in a glass of water and the plant will continue to grow shoots which you can cut to sprinkle onto salads and sandwiches. I started growing microgreens last year, there are 40 times the vitamins in microgreens as in the fully grown version and they are so easy to grow, thankfully the range is much wider than just mustard and cress (or am I showing my age!!) If you do, adopt the “no dig” procedure to protect the structure of the soil and never use pesticides. Its additive so just be warned, my living room table is currently covered in tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce seedlings
Take care of your skin. Winter can irritate your skin, leaving it dry and itchy so we have created a body oil that is nutritious, easily absorbed, and will soothe your itchy skin wonderfully well. By blending organic carrier oil of jojoba, apricot kernel and grapeseed, apply after your bath or shower. We also recommend dry body brushing to not only exfoliate your skin but brushing stimulates your circulation, removing toxins and delivering fresh nutritious blood. So, we suggest that you dry brush each morning, shower then apply the body oil under a light body lotion, and allow it to be absorbed for 5 minutes then you can get dressed as normal with the soft scent of pure organic essential oils. Your skin will feel like velvet.
We know we said three tips but we must stress the importance of mindfulness practice. Mindfulness allows the brain space and time to relax, by concentrating only on the present and allowing your breath to find its own rhythm, you will notice your shoulders loosen and lower, and you become aware of what’s happening around you. You will no longer be on auto-pilot or reacting to situations or not listening to what others have to say. You will be present in your day and present for your friends and family and yourself.

Training for a marathon or 5/10K? By incorporating body brushing, energising oils into your daily routine will help to keep your muscles, tendons and ligaments soft pliable and strong.
Drink plenty of water and eat a protein rich diet as it aids tissue repair, recovery from running and produces nutritious red blood cells.
Appreciatate your sense of smell
It has been found that scent could help to reverse the negative memory-erodingeffects of technology. Bursts of familiar scents are evocative and remind us of times gone by. And whether you’re watching the flicker of your favourite soy candle as the aroma wafts around your room, or spritzing your favourite perfume onto your pulse points that takes you back in time to your first holiday, the power of scent could actually help boost your brain health.
When we inhale an odour, the olfactory nerve sends scent messages to the hippocampus and amygdala regions of the brain which control learning and memory. Certain scents have been shown to improve emotional health and even enhance productivity and focus.
Aromatherapy essential oils in particular can have far reaching benefits. A study published in The Official Journal of the Japanese Psychogeriactric Society found that diffusing lemon and rosemary oils in the morning, and lavender and orange essential oils in the evening improved brain function in Alzheimer’s patients.
Your Five Things to Know about May
Look out for our Hedgehogs by leaving fresh water in a shallow dish, allowing them an area of your garden that is undisturbed and slightly wild. PLEASE ALWAYS CHECK BEFORE YOU STRIM AND TELL OTHERS TOO !
May is No NOW MAY, when we leave the mower and strimmer in the shed, enjoy the wildflowers which will take the opportunity to grow. Why not extend your No Mowing through June and into “thigh high” July, my garden becomes alive with insects, hedgehogs, frogs and newts all enjoying the freedom and cover. But don’t keep it to yourself, tell your neighbours and your local council and maybe add a “pardon the weeds, I’m feeding the bees” sign so everyone knows how wonderful you are.
Our Summer scent is back in stock. Made with organic essential oils of Sage, Pink, Grapefruit, Lavender and Rose Geranium, the scent is wonderful and evokes a warm summer evening feeling. Sage is excellent at refreshing the energy within your home, think smudging. Plus it is believed (aromatherapists know its true!) that mosquitos and flies are deterred from an area when sage is diffusing plus they do not like the scent of citrus. The lavender and rose geranium oils bring a summery feel so fill your home with our “help me, say hello to summer”. Available in a 250g soy candle, reed diffuser, essential oil blend and, of course, as gifts.
May 1st is International Dawn Chorus Day and it is a real treat to sit and listen to the birds early in the morning., I am a big gardener so lets join in with the National Garden Week and maybe spend time planting your seeds in your veggie patch, creating spaces for nature and leaving a big patch of nettles and brambles for the butterflies. The benefits of meditation are vast, May 21st is the World Meditation Day so, if you don’t already meditate, give it a go, maybe in your garden.
Make May a month to discover and explore eating a vegetarian and vegan diet. Studies have shown that eating plant based provides all the nutrition your body needs, you will naturally be leaner and its easier on your pocket not to mention a huge step to protecting farm animals. I believe in Wellness, I will promote living organically at every chance I get, I also believe in finding time to be quiet.
