Our final thoughts on November…..

Please remember to double check all bonfires for sleeping hedgehogs and only light one side so any creature can escape, lots of supermarkets are now only stocking silent fireworks which is marvellous. Please enjoy Bonfire Night safely.

The leaves are falling from the trees in great numbers now. For gardeners, leaves make leave mould or gardeners gold! Simply gather them up and place them in an aerated bag, leave them in a corner and come spring you will have the best compost there is. But please leave lots of leaves on the soil for worms to take underground, this too fertilises the soil. Leave some leaves in corners of the garden for hedgehogs, frogs and newts to use as a big duvet for winter, dont cut back all the seedheads as ladybirds sleep the winter through. They look gorgeous on a frosty morning! The main job to do this time of year in the garden is to feed the birds and most important of all, keep a clean water supply for all creatures. Some up high for the birds but also some on the ground for badgers etc. Winter is a time for the gardener to leave the garden to be quiet for all the mammals sleeping. Dont remove nettles as they will have butterfly eggs on ready for spring. Just say “goodnight” and walk away from tidying.

“Anyone who thinks fallen leaves are dead has never watched them dancing on a windy day.”
