How to have beautiful summer skin

Tis the sea-sun to be jolly
— a very clever witty person!

Summer can be tricky for our skin both on our body and face, this month we look at how organic carrier oils can help rehydrate and replenish our skin, plus we look deeper into Earthing!

Your skin is made up of three layers, the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis, your skin is an organ and is the largest of all organs within your body so it deserves careful handling and consideration. Sunshine is very drying and irritating to your skin.

The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin and creates a waterproofing function, the epidermis also is responsible for the skin texture so we need to protect it at all times. Simple self care has an amazing effect on the epidermis, simply by keeping it protected when in the harsh summer sunshine and hydrated after baths and showers, your skin will feel soft, velvety and stretchy. But how do we keep a soft supple skin during summer? Well its easy!

  • Drink plenty of water as dehydration causes slack skin which looks dull.

  • Gentle dry body brushing stimulates the removal of toxins and the replenishment of minerals and vitamins

  • Apply oil to your skin. Pure organic vegetable oils penetrate the epidermis and hydrate deep down in the skins layers. Never use mineral oils as they sit on the surface of the skin, suffocating the epidermis and give no benefits at all.

  • Your skin shows when you feel stressed by becoming itchy and inflamed so try and stay as calm as possible by using meditation and mindfulness.

  • Avoid sunbeds and sitting in the strongest sun shine. Always use a sunscreen and apply a cooling aftersun if you have been out a little too much. Red skin can be damaged skin so early treatment is key to its repair.

  • Getting enough sleep is very important as your skin repairs and rejuvenates during your sleep.

  • Good nutrition maintains your skins health. Foods rich in omega 3 and 6 are very beneficial to a healthy glowing skin. Good sources are chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, almonds, sweet potato, eggs, avocado and olive oils

We carefully selected organic carrier oils rich in vitamins and minerals and kind to the skin. In our massage oils, we blend apricot kernel, grapeseed and jojoba oils, all known to penetrate deep into the dermis, which is the layer underneathe the epidermis oil, helping to hydrate and repair your skin deep down whilst delivering well needed moisture.

The hypodermis, or subcutaneous tissue, is the deepest layer of your skin and connects the dermis to muscles and bones, its function is to keep you warm and protect your internal frame from harm. As we grow older, the hypodermis becomes thinner. A good diet, daily exercise, good sun protection, a healthy skin health routine, and a healthy sleep pattern help to keep the hypodermis healthy which, in turn, slows down the aging process.

Care must be taken to note blemishes, moles and sun damage, if in doubt always ask someone to look. Have a look at Skcin, The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity, they have an app and lots of useful information.

Benefits of skin brushing

  • brushing upwards toward3 the heart is said to eliminate a pound of impurities from the skin each day

  • daily body brushing for just a few minutes enlivens your body and wakes up the organ systems

  • helps to remove dead dry skin to enable oils and creams to be absorbed by the skin

Have you heard of Earthing?

Stress is another key factor to how our skin ages. We are passionate about helping you find ways to rebalance and release the tension from everyday life, we love Earthing. Theres something wonderful about wiggling your toes in the summer grass (even better early morning when the grass is damp with dew).

Earthing is basically walking bare foot in order to ground yourself and connect with the earth. Here are some tips to help you gain the most benefit from your experience.

  • find a quiet place in nature

  • remove your shoes to connect directly with the earth

  • clear your mind as you walk barefoot

  • if you can, lay down on the earth and practise deep, slow breathing and simply be present.

  • maybe you will feel the warm healing energy moving up your legs.

Whats happening in August

  • “say hello to autumn” candles, reed diffusers, essential oil blends and autumnal gifts are back in stock. Autumn is a a vibrant, spicy, colourful season. Misty mornings followed by the promise of warm sunny days make us feel relaxed, everything feels loose and free.

  • We are busy getting our Christmas Gift Shop ready for you to browse the new gifts, this will be open early September.

  • 6th August is National Friendship Day, why don’t you send your best friend, daughter or work friend a Letterbox Gift, filled with wonderfully therapeutic aromatherapy goodies, this is a lovely way to show you care.

And finally ….

Theres alot in the news about how our climate is changing, we need to act now. If every person around the world, changed one big thing, it would have such an impact. But tell your MP, Council, Energy provider, Water company, supermarket and other big corporate entities that you insist they change their ways and find sustainable methods.

August is the month for trips to the beach, maybe get your kids to do a beach tidy, they will love using the litter pickers and can proudly say they ve done their bit! Everytime we go for a walk in the local woods, we take our litter picker and pick the litter as we stroll, makes a huge difference to the wildlife.

Have a wonderful month, lets hope theres plenty of opportunity to get outside.

breathe in the sweetness that hovers in August
