How to be happy & healthy -August - Chapter 8 of 12

Inspirational quote - “I love that a scent can make memories come alive” - unknown

August is a month rich with homegrown fresh fruit, vegetables and salads. Fill your meals with fresh colourful foods to nourish your body, give your digestive system a holiday from heavy stews.  Smoothies are a fantastic start to the day, full of protein, vitamins and minerals which boost your immune system.

Old folklore says that if August is unusually warm, winter will be long and white. Part of me hopes for a hot august so we can enjoy lots of snow and maybe a white Christmas.

One good thing that happened as a result of lockdown was the benefits to our lovely planet. Skies were blue and clearer with the night sky full of stars. Rivers and seas improved,  you could actually see fish in the Venetian canal. A hole in the ozone layer above the Artic has closed.  The air we breathe was much cleaner, less polluted which resulted in less asthma issues. It was so lovely reading how lots more people connected with nature, gardening and the environment, then we went back to work and other matters took our attention. We really hope that all the environmental gains will be held onto, we are not politically active but we must keep going. This all happened in just 3 months, wow! We must keep going for our grandchildren. Keep talking, learning and being interested. Take part in Citizen Science Projects like The Big Butterfly Count and Say No to the Mow to protect insects. Refuse to use pesticides around your home, workplace and garden. Keep areas wild in your garden and convince your neighbours (kindly and politely) to join in, make a hedgehog highway. Reduce your single use plastic use and fit a filter to your washing machine to catch tiny micro plastics. Avoid use cosmetics that contain micro plastics, go organic if you can. There are so many ways to clean up our planet, if you do your bit and tell others, all of the gains from lockdown will keep going. Only then will big business and government take note and do their bit (hopefully) too.  xx
